SWOT and Financial Analysis of Selfridges PLC has four stores, one of which is the second biggest in the UK. The exposition will assess the key realities about the organization and why they are significant. This paper will cover the budgetary exhibition, promoting technique and a SWOT investigation for Selfridges. The organization is notable and remarkable as a result of its history and how it as of now works. SWOT is an abbreviation for qualities, shortcomings, openings and dangers. By investigating the four points, it is simpler to review the current business situation.Once all the issues have been recognized changes can be made so as to improve the organization. The PEST examination and other comparable systems can likewise be utilized notwithstanding the SWOT for additional examination and improvement. Foundation Selfridges is situated in the focal point of London, on Oxford Street. Subsequent to taking only a year to assemble, the store was opened on fifteenth March. Harry Gordo n Selfridge, the originator of Selfridges needed to assemble an American retail chain in London. The store provided numerous items and administrations including, aroma, attire, home apparatuses and jewellery.Selfridges is presently a Public Limited Company which implies it offers to the general population. Showcasing methodology Marketing technique incorporates the items, estimating, advancements and relationship the board. A method of staying faithful to clients is by offering them a reliability card, when the client utilizes their Selfridges faithfulness card they will get one point for each pound they spend. Selfridges offer items which fluctuate from extravagance things to high road brands. On some event famous people will visit the store and this pulls in numerous clients on one single day.Selfridges likewise advances the store by having deals which offer markdown on things so as to draw in the client. Money related execution When Harry first purchased the land where Selfridges would be fabricated it cost him $400,000 anyway in the 21st century the property was esteemed at more than ? 324m. Selfridges was sold In July 1951 for ? 3. 4 million to Lewis' Investment Trust and after 52 years the store was exchanged for ? 600m to Canadian food and expert retail agent Galen Weston and his family. In 1991 a multi year, ? 00m remodel was finished which refreshed the look and size of the store. The benefit in 2009 was ? 84m and is set to increment consistently yearly. SWOT investigation Strengths Firstly, Being arranged in the core of London is a significant favorable position for Selfridges on the grounds that focal London is such a well known spot. Also, the items offered fluctuate from toys, garments, beautifying agents, home apparatuses, furniture, adornments and food. Selfridges has its own site so it can sell items online to individuals on the off chance that they can't visit the store for any reason.Furthermore a large portion of the items sold in store are additionally accessible on the web so there this spares time for clients and representatives just as sparing space coming up. Selfridges comprises of more than 500 assorted brands available, this implies it spares individuals from going to various stores so it is significantly simpler for individuals to shop. Individuals can see extravagance brands, for example, Bvlgari, Christian Dior, Prada, Versace and some more. Topshop, Lipsy, FCUK and AllSaints are only four of numerous high road brands for individuals to look at.Selfridges provide food for various markets so there is something for everybody coming up. Shortcomings Even however Selfridges is anticipating opening new stores later on, there are as of now just four stores. Stores, for example, John Lewis and Debenhams have more than 100 stores over the UK which makes it increasingly available for individuals. A portion of the administrations Selfridges give might be costly in some people’s assessment. For instance the vehi cle leave at the London store costs ? 7 least, this may make clients park and shop some place else. With today’s expanding issue of an unnatural weather change and creature savagery, a few items may turn into an issue, or need changing so as to adjust to guidelines. For instance, the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton chose to blacklist shopping at Selfridges in light of the fact that foie gras (a food item produced using duck or goose liver) is being sold in the stores. Selfridges has various contenders, its fundamental adversaries are Harrods, Harvey Nichols and John Lewis. Openings According to the Independent, there are tentative arrangements to build up the north segment of the Oxford Street store and make an inn, workplaces, leisure. In the future Selfridges might open new stores in England or abroad in an alternate nation, for example, America where it is probably going to succeed, trade rates are likewise low. Selfridges as of now has their own garments extend for females so it may be acceptable to begin another range, for example, male attire or beauty care products. The market is continually changing and adjusting, new brands and items are continually being made. So the way that Selfridges is continually restoring their range is a chance. Faithful clients will consistently come back to see the most recent items in the market. ThreatsStores, for example, Harrods, Harvey Nichols and John Lewis all posture as significant dangers to Selfridges PLC on the grounds that they are totally arranged in the focal point of London and furthermore draw in numerous expected clients. All the stores will rival each other with expenses and items. The current financial atmosphere is awful for the organization since it influences numerous clients and the manner in which they go through cash. Charges, legislative issues and government additionally have a significant effect on stores, for example, Selfridges. The current monetary atmosphere is likely the greatest factor for Selfridges. Monetary atmosphere has influenced individuals and how they burn through money.Because Selfridges spends significant time in extravagance merchandise, the costs might be marginally high in some people’s assessment which will make them be hesitant to purchase items from Selfridges. A few people will decide to shop at other high road shops which offer better estimated things. End In my sentiment Selfridges keeps on staying effective during the monetary emergency and stay serious against all other retail locations. Taking everything into account the principle qualities are that is it situated in the focal point of London on Oxford Street and there is a significant assortment of products. The primary soft spot for Selfridges is conceivably the current financial emergency since it impacts how individuals go through cash. Miss Selfridge, the woman’s dress range began in 1966 and has developed persistently and is presently a significant high road store. Another op en door could be that Selfridges may conceivably open new item ranges or administrations, for example, lodgings or relaxation. The field of HR has truly been restricted to an administrative or managerial job in the business field, managing undertakings like finance or participation. In the cutting edge advertise, new center HR obligations incorporate enrollment and preparing, oversight of legitimate and administrative consistence, benefits organization and the shielding of secret worker data, alongside some more. These undertakings can't be completed viably without the utilization of cutting edge devices. Advances in innovation have not just made the treatment of essential authoritative errands increasingly productive, they have extended the job of HR and made new trains inside the field. Database the executives frameworks are a prime case of how innovation has encouraged the development and extension of the HR field. Utilizing a DBMS smoothes out the administration of representative data. Information passage and following, examination of worker data, benefits organization and candidate following are completely made simpler and less tedious, with the data accessible and sorted out with the punch of a key (Laudon and Laudon, 165). Human asset re-appropriating is a quickly developing field completely all alone. Numerous organizations, little and huge the same, are going to HR specialization firms, for example, Aon Human Capital Services, Hewitt Associates, and Affiliated Computer Services. The Braun Consulting Group detailed that while setting aside cash is the explanation behind re-appropriating for about portion of the organizations studied, increasing outside mastery, improving assistance quality, and having the option to concentrate on their center business were additionally refered to as key inspirations. These organizations naturally offer administrations in four head regions of HR functionalities: finance, time and work the board, benefits organization, and HR the executives. The absolute most generally utilized programming applications are finance and remuneration the board programming. Finance programming is intended to computerize finance assignments, including overseeing finance charge issues like government and state counts. Moreover, finance programming helps with making checks, documenting tax documents, and making worker charge records. Remuneration the board oftware computerizes compensation audits, plans, and planning to give some examples. This product might be facilitated in-house by the working association, or might be online. Electronic suppliers incorporate Oasis Outsourcing, Intuit, and Amycheck. These specialist co-ops have helped independent ventures and enormous organizations the same in smoothing out finance and advantages the executives. Worker enrollment and pr eparing are generally viewed as two of the most significant assignments in human asset the board. Pulling in and holding skillful, solid workers is fundamental for accomplishment in any business. The approach of the Internet has radically modified the manner in which associations scan for up-and-comers, and the other way around. The Internet permits organizations to arrive at an a lot more prominent pool of up-and-comers with a more noteworthy scope of information, aptitudes, and capacities, which thusly expands the chances of finding a decent counterpart for the position(s). Bigger associations frequently utilize their HRIS divisions in creating inside and out organization sites with nitty gritty sets of responsibilities and necessities, just as the organization’s statement of purpose and corporate culture, with an end goal to draw in representatives that fit with the mentality and estimations of the organization. Littler associations can't stand to make and keep up a huge and frequently costly site this way, yet there are numerous choices for re-appropriating on the web enrollment. Notwithstanding re-appropriated organizations, enormous occupation posting sites, for example, Monster. com are mainstream destinations for individuals scanning for employments to post continues and quest for a wide scope of openings. Innovation has likewise been actualized in preparing representatives. E-learning is a broadly utilized device in worker preparing and advancement. The term â€Å"E-learning† incorporates any type of preparing finished with electronic help. This incorporates internet preparing and advancement, tele-class preparing, talk room preparing, and video preparing. The benefits of these types of preparing incorporate accommodation and the capacity to control the pace of the guidance. The utilization of this medium, notwithstanding, ought to for the most part be restricted to encouraging the fundamental ideas and abilities required for the activity, with additional inside and out great preparing for increasingly explicit aptitudes or necessities (Smith and Mazin 69). â€Å"Communication is the way in to any change† (Rudnick, 45). In any business, ffective correspondence between workers, directors, and clients isn't only a pleasant perquisite, it is imperative to the achievement (or disappointment) of the association. The period of paper notices, faxes, and â€Å"regular† mail is on out the entryway. Email has quickly become the most broadly utilized type of correspondence in the business world. Texting, interior dat abases, and release sheets are likewise very much used to speak with providers, workers, and clients the same (Laudon and Laudon, 191). The blast of PDA and cell phone use has likewise changed the manner in which associations work together. Numerous associations are permitting representatives to work more hours from home, leading business over the web and telephone. Hours are increasingly adaptable, and it is not, at this point essential for a physical nearness in the workplace for an enormous part of the work. Interchanges with clients are additionally changed. The Internet has opened a huge new market to numerous organizations. A website page can possibly acquaint the organization with a large number of new clients, and furthermore takes into consideration simpler installments, shopping, and requesting, all from home. Organizations additionally have an expanded open door for improving client relations, on account of the Internet. Input is accessible right away by means of email, online conversation gatherings, and web-based social networking. The speed of the criticism permits associations more opportunity to investigate issues and fabricate associations with fulfilled, bringing customers back. In HR, this development in the methods for correspondence has opened new ways to representative relations also. Ordinarily, workers have abstained from grumbling about legitimate worries because of dread of counter. The capacity to send messages gives a relative obscurity that takes into consideration more opportunity of correspondence between the HR office and a company’s laborers. This additionally permits increasingly prepared access to data, for example, disciplinary rules and worker handbooks; keeping representatives educated assists with improving the general demeanor of the working environment. One of the most up to date inclines is interpersonal interaction locales. A huge number of individuals are enrolled with so much locales as Facebook, MySpace, or LinkedIn. A TUC instructions via web-based networking media and HR records a portion of the bigger issues encompassing the utilization of these locales. Utilization of these locales by representatives positively could be inconvenience for human asset administrators. There is the concern that getting to these locales during work hours, on work stations, will meddle with profitability. Likewise, the direct of employee’s on these sites has become a potential concern. Posts managing breaks of business classification or sabotaging a company’s notoriety might require disciplinary activity. These issues are as yet dubious now. Numerous advances in innovation relate to helping debilitated individuals in performing ordinary errands that they would somehow or another be not able to do. As Don Dalton says, these arrangements â€Å"remove the â€Å"dis† from different disabilities† and make their progress into the workforce a lot simpler. This permits organizations to enlist a progressively various staff and keeps them consistent with EEOC. For individuals with physical impedances, Dalton records a wide assortment of accessible innovation that can help with utilizing a PC, for instance. The most savvy is voice acknowledgment programming, however there are various sorts of consoles just as a head-mounted mouse controller that can be gotten for use in the work environment. Dazzle individuals likewise have choices accessible. Discourse synthesizers, record perusers, and screen audit bundles enable the ignorant concerning access PC reports as effectively as the individuals who can see. These innovations and more permit organizations to be agreeable with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. With this blast of availability and innovation in the work environment, security is additionally an enormous concern. Programmer, robbery, extortion and vandalism have been a great concern of a business’s databases (Laudon and Laudon, 232). With the developing PC education of the workforce, and the developing utilization of PCs at work for individual reasons, associations are getting increasingly stressed over dangers from online sources to their systems. Malware turned into the main danger to business’s online security in 2007 (Dumitru, 2). While these issues may appear to be an issue for the IT office, the HR office ought to likewise stay up with the latest on PC security also. The data in representative documents is touchy, and each safeguard ought to be taken to protect it remains private, including extreme security approaches just as solid firewalls. â€Å"The most noteworthy catastrophe in America isn't the decimation of our characteristic assets, however that disaster is extraordinary. The really incredible disaster is the decimation of our HR by our inability to completely use our capacities, which implies that most people go to their graves with their music still in them. Oliver Wendell Holmes said all that needed to be said. The capacities, information, and gifts of an organization’s workforce are the greatest resources. Without qualified, propelled laborers, any business extraordinary or little is destined to disappointment. The previous fifty years have been a momentous story of mechanical advances, a nyway it ought to consistently be recalled that the innovation is here to help and elevate men in their endeav

Referee Report for Economics Manuscript Essay Example for Free

Arbitrator Report for Economics Manuscript Essay â€Å"Different Risk-Adjusted Fund Performance Measures: A Comparison† Synopsis This paper looks at different hazard balanced execution measures for a lot of shared assets. The creators contend that exhibition estimates dependent on Value-at-Risk (VaR) or Extreme Value Theory (EVT) are more suitable than other well known execution estimates, for example, the Sharpe proportion (SR), the Treynor list (TI) or Jensenâ's Alpha (JA) . They propose a presentation list like the SR and the TI dependent on misfortunes determined by methods for VaR together with EVT. They find that EVT-VaR measures are increasingly fitting within the sight of non-ordinary information. Primary Comments The subject of the paper is of pertinence for budgetary specialists just as scholastics and it is positively material to the current money related solidness setting. The paper is additionally for the most part wellwritten. Be that as it may, I have a few remarks for its improvement. 1. The commitment of the paper isn't unmistakably expressed. In the sixth passage of the presentation, the creators recommend that their principle commitment is the development of an exhibition file dependent on EVT-VAR. Notwithstanding, it isn't exceptionally clear why the new proposed measure ought to be better according to existing measures as it is currently clarified. The facts confirm that VaR or EVT should be increasingly solid measures for extraordinary occasions yet when taking a gander at recipe (13) it isn't evident why this measure ought to be more dependable than the conventional measures. The denominator has, indeed, a â€Å"extreme return† rather than the SR or TI wh ich have carefully second minutes, so it isn't extremely straight advance to relate these measures. A superior activity ought to be done at clarifying the ramifications of such VaR based measure, how it identifies with different measures and why it ought to be better. 2. Why have the measures been looked at just in a â€Å"static† way? It is broadly known in the account writing that advantage return unpredictability is time-differing, and somewhat, additionally anticipated returns. It is conceivable to circumvent the last by contending market productivity (which is additionally flawed) yet it is positively significantly more hard to contend against time-fluctuation of the standard deviation in the VaR measures (or in the SA and TI proportions). This is significant as the â€Å"good† or â€Å"bad† appropriateness of a specific exhibition measure could be test subordinate and as it is presently with unequivocal measures, this is difficult to reveal. For example, while the creators represent nonnormality of profits in the changed VaR measure by methods for a Corner-Fisher quantile, they accept a consistent standard deviation which implies that in times of high instability they could even now downplay the VaR. So at the base, the exhibition examinations ought to be accomplished for the full example and distinctive sub-tests and it ought to be tried whether the measures got are fundamentally extraordinary over various examples. 3. The creators focus on top 10 and base 10 assets for their examination and disposed of different assets â€Å"for the purpose of simplicity†. Be that as it may, by picking just the â€Å"tail† reserves, the creators are giving from the beginning a favorable position to EVT or VaR measures. It would be progressively fitting to likewise report results on (state) 10 â€Å"mid† reserves. 4. It isn't clear why the main 10 assets â€Å"show more takeoffs from normality† comparable to base assets. This finding ought to be extended and the instinct behind it ought to be better clarified. One could contend that â€Å"losers† could be more unstable than â€Å"winners† as the degree of vulnerability as for the reserve may expand which could prompt increasingly outrageous returns. Actually, in the third passage of the exact outcome segment it says â€Å"the base 10 assets have, when all is said in done, higher VaR esteems than the main ones, which implies that they are progressively powerless to outrageous events† which is to some degree opposing with the finding that the best 10 supports show more takeoffs from typicality. Besides, one of the principle discoveries of the examination is that the VaR and EVT execution measures perform best corresponding to different estimates when there are more takeoffs from typicality in returns. A superior endeavor to accommodate the discoveries of nonnormality, the â€Å"winner versus looser† reserves and the outcomes on the presentation measures with some past investigations or acceptable instinct ought to be finished. Different remarks 1. The commitments of the paper ought to be expressed before in the paper and not nearly toward the finish of the presentation as it is currently. The commitments ought to be more clear (see likewise point 1 above) and ought to be better identified with the current pertinent writing. 2. The end is excessively long. The finishing up comments ought to be a lot shorter and should just sum up the fundamental discoveries and accommodate them with the issues brought up in the presentation just as feature potential augmentations for future work. 3. The tables ought to likewise be improved. They ought to have a short portrayal of the substance to encourage perusing. As it is presently, the peruser needs to continually return to the principle content to discover what the substance mean. 4. The figures are not really noticeable, they ought to likewise be improved and a short clarification ought to be given.

Mechanisms For Risk Management And Control - 1671 Words

Imagine if an agency was able to actually ensure that its officers were safely responding to calls for service, communicating with the public in a courteous manner, and enforcing the law without violating the rights of the citizens they are sworn to protect. The thought of providing this type of oversight and close supervision seems nearly impossible—there are far too many officers and far too few supervisors who already have a myriad of tasks. However, while this might first appear as an exercise in wish fulfillment, the solution lies in a tool that most agencies are already utilizing: the body-worn camera (BWC). As more and more law enforcement agencies purchase BWCs in response to the public’s demand for transparency in police†¦show more content†¦Ask the question, â€Å"Where is the agency bleeding?† If an agency has experienced negative media attention or civil litigation as a result of poor officer performance, this model will help leaders discover which incidents create the greatest opportunity for the negative results they are trying to mitigate. Vehicular pursuits, arrests involving the use of force, and confrontations with combative subjects during mental health–related calls are the most prominent areas where law enforcement agencies have experienced loss. The agency’s first step toward employing BWCs for risk management involves identifying the incident types that have been most problematic for the agency. Review the agency’s loss data to determine what types of incidents historically have had the greatest negative affect on officer safet y and civil liability. Site and Office Environment-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Site and Office Environment. Answer: Introduction Site and office environment safety has become an important area that businesses need to monitor in recent years as it affects the perception of an organization to the government authorities and human resource which has a direct effect on the organization's performance(Singh, Hinze, Coble, 1999). Site and work environment Safety is usually associated with hazardous working environments such as construction sites, transport and oil and gas industries. This is not entirely true, as site work environment safety has also grown to be a major concern and one which employees will consider and evaluate before accepting a job. This makes site and work environment safety also constitutes to an organizations innovation, development, and progress. The report shall evaluate the organization complete site safety and the services the business offers thus helping determine important site safety tips and areas which must be considered by organizations as well as professions seeking to develop a caree r in the field. The report will also highlight important areas which businesses must address so as to ensure site and workplace safety has been met. Site Safety Site safety mainly refers to construction sites which bring along many hazards. This makes these sites highlighted more with regard to human resource safety concerns(Hislop, 1999). Aspects such as fall protection, sharp object hazard, falling debris, scaffolding safety and eye protection are common safety requirements which need to be addressed. Training and guidance Construction companies and site managers thus need to address these points and offer their personal the required safety equipment and training so as to prevent them. This makes it important for the human resource manager to team up with the safety manager and assess as well as provide training and guidance to the staff(Sherratt, 2016). This ensures the staffs are aware regarding the hazards and safety precautions which can be taken so as to avoid injury. Staff and skilled professional insurance In addition to offering guidance and training, its also critical for the organizations to also offer life and just insurance which would allow for the employees or their families to be compensated for any injury or loss of life which may occur on while working for the organization(Hughes Ferrett, 2015). Compensation is an important requirement any staff member working in a highly hazardous environment will expect since there is a higher risk of injury or loss of life while on the job. This makes it important for organizations to pay close attention to the safety services being offered by the business to its employees so as to retain the staffs interest as well as ensure the business retains its experienced and qualified staff which will ensure the businesses continued development. Office Safety The office environment has also been classified to bring along several major hazards which makes it important for each organization to consider highlighting and addressing safety concerns so as to boost employee safety(Saunders, 1995). Aspects of stairs are rarely classified as a safety hazard but statistics place 1 million series staircase injuries each year out of which 16,000 results in death. This clearly highlights the risks associated with stair irrespective of their size making it a major concern which every organization must address at the workplace Office hazard identification and management As technology developed people need to move less often which is resulting in more health issues for the office worker. This has made it a major concern which business owners and managers need to address so as to uphold employee safety and health concerns thus making it important for the organization to hire a health and safety manager or place and qualified individual with the required training in charge of health and safety concerns at the office(FEMA, 1997). Incorporating the staff into the process In any situation, hazards are not visible or experience by all staff members thus its also important to encourage staff perfection towards the process so as to identify hazards which may not be clearly noticeable by the management. A simple example could be a pointy sharp nail or tack which may be protruding from a staff members seat and one which is likely to result in injuring the user(WLG, N.D). The staff member should be able to highlight such instances immediately and the hazard eliminated so as to prevent the threat of injury. Facilities prompting health and safety Computers have grown to become a basic requirement for every organization but at the same time, they also attract serious health problems. This makes it important for the organization to offer a healthy working environment as well as health-conscious equipment which can be used to prevent the injuries or health concerns posed by computer use over extended periods of time(Parker, 2013). In addition to equipment, there should also be staff friendly policies which assist the staff members to promote their health. Having policies such as simply allowing computer operators to take a short walk or standing break every hour is critical towards enhancing their computer operators physical and mental health. Conclusion Safety is, therefore, a subject which needs to be addressed for both the site as well as the office which both working environments attract their own work hazards. Having a training professions qualified to manage work environment safety is a growing requirement for businesses today since many staff and skilled professions evaluate the facilities being offered by businesses before committing to the job opportunity. For young professional, this s also a profession to consider as the scope and demand for site and office safety officers are also increasing and likely to deliver important benefits in future. This is where organizations like complete-site-safety come in to play as they offer important training services which young professions can access and master health and safety skills which can be used to seek the best safety jobs in future. The main things I use my computer for are gaming, running server applications like web and file servers and doing a lot of virtualization, which is running several operating systems inside of the main operating system. I have a really big monitor so I can keep track of a lot of things at once. It is 24 inches and it allows me to have several applications open at the same time. For instance, I often have both a web browser and a word processor open when I am doing research so I can research and type at the same time; this is very handy. Another one of the most important parts of a computer for me is the RAM. Most people don't really need a lot of RAM. However, it you start doing a lot of multitasking like I do with several things running at once, you will find that if you don't have enough RAM it can really bog down your computer. This is because your operating system will try to use your hard drive and your hard drive is a lot slower than the RAM. The video card is another important component. I have a very nice GTX280 which is great for playing all the new high-end games. The next very important thing is the processor. Without a fast processor, all your other components will run slowly. I have a quad core processor and it is very fast and lets me do all of the multitasking that I want to. Student 2 - Brittany (Grade 12 High School Student) Hi, I'm Brittany. I am a grade twelve student and I was asked what I use my computer for. I have a computer but I am not a 'huge' computer user. I use it personally for things like MSN and Facebook - basically chatting with friends. I also like to watch online movies and TV shows and I download a LOT of music. For school, I use my computer to research information for projects, make presentations and do word processing. That's pretty much it; as I said I'm not a 'huge' computer user. End of document

Book report of Godfather Essay Example

Book report of Godfather Essay Example Book report of Godfather Essay Book report of Godfather Essay Essay Topic: The Godfather The most important role not only in the family, but also in the whole book is Vito Coralline, known as the Godfather, the chief of his family. Vito was born in Sicily, Italy. He led a normal and peaceful life with his parents until his father was murdered. As the result, Vito had to escape to the America alone at 12 years old, and lived in a slum, which was called New Works hells kitchen and worked in a grocery store. He should have had such a simple and normal life with his wife, but a man ruined it and changed his life totally. It was Finance who often bullied others and asked for money from the neighborhood. Vito Coralline had no choice but to kill Finance when he came down on Vito for money that Vito had risked his life to get. Therefore, Coralline earned respects and some money by protecting his friends there. Then, he went into the olive oil importing business and made his first fortune. When the ban on alcohol came to pass in 1920, he turned to smuggle wine in from Canada. Then, not the ordinary businessman any longer, Vito gradually became to a great Don in the world of criminal enterprise. However, his wealth was not the reason why he could receive so many respects and worship from others. Vito was kind and onerous to those who really needed help. On the other hand, he was also determined and manful to his enemy. He made good relationship with important men in business, entertaining business and politics. By the end of the Prohibition periods and the start of the Great Depression, Vito Coralline had been called as Don, Don Coralline, and respected as the Godfather. Don had three sons-Sonny, Fred and Michael. Michael was the only one who had no interest in family business. He entered a university and later Joined the army during World War II. He also had a lovely girl friend and planned to merry on Christmas. Although he hoped to keep a distance with his powerful family, it was his fate that guided him to find the most appropriate position for him years later. The Don also had an adopted sonTom Harden. Tom was an American man; he was a lawyer and later worked for the Don as a counselor. The story began in the Dons daughtersconces wedding in the August 1945. Many people, poor and rich, humble and dignified, all came up to show their loyalty and also with the requirements, because they knew that by tradition no Sicilian can refuse a request on his daughters wedding. Johnny Fortunate, Dons godson was one of them. Johnny was a pop singer but unfortunately he had got something wrong with his throat, so he wanted to turn to be an actor. However, Johnny was hated by his boss Wool and was refused to take the leading role in a suggestion Harden made directly. He knew Dons power, but he did not take it so serious. Soon, Don gave him a great threat which made Wool had to give up. As the result, Johnny got the role, which contributed him to win an Oscar Academy Award. So we could see in others eyes, Don Coralline was the almighty God: they showed their respects to the Don, and the Don would give them help in return. Several weeks later, a crude drug smuggler Virgil Zoology visited the Don for cooperation. Having seen the hefty risk in drug smuggling, the Don refused him. Then Solomon ganged up with Digital Family, another strong underground Italian family in New York. It was also the rival of Coralline Family. They planned to shoot the Don down. The Don got several bullets but miraculously survived. So they planned another murder. However, the second murder was defeated by Michaels wisdom. With these failures, Zoology had to call for a peaceful negotiation. On the Cortisones part, everybody hated Zoology and all wanted to kill him immediately. But smart Zlotys chose Michael to meet, the only one who was pure and harmless apparently. At that time, Michael had made up his mind to kill the tricky and crude man. With this chance, Michael fired Zoology dead. Also for this crime, Michael had to be sent to Sicily, where he hided for two years. Back to New York, the disaster continued. Sconces husband Carlo hated Sconces family because they left him out of the familys business. So one of those rival-families, mixed up with Carlo to kill Sonny. The Don had to take charge of the family again with his bad health. He extended his business on the west coast and prepared to revenge. Meanwhile, the Don arranged to get Michael back home. Over one year later, Michael came back to New York. In that period of time, Michael got the chance to know what of a person his father was. He understood the Don and realized his responsibility to his family. So Michael began to take over the family. Besides the investment in the West, they endeavored to set more new relationship in the political world; they secretly trained the qualified killers working for them. Seemed that everything was Just about ready, fate played a Joke to Michael again: the Don died from heart attack suddenly. The other five biggest underground families all thought it was a chance to do the clean work on Coralline Family. None of them realized Coralline Family had strengthened a lot more by the past a few years. It was time the Crossness bounced up and became the leading role in the underground world again. So Michael really did something, he and his guardsmen killed most of the other families leaders overnight. With this fight, Michael restored Coralline Familys power in New York, and for himself, he earned reputation. He replaced his father as the Don, Don Michael Coralline. He became the powerful umbrella, the almighty god as his father. Michael was honored as Godfather as well. That was the end part of the book. Michael was always with loyalty, intelligence and courage as his father Vito Coralline. Those men showed their good characters to the readers. God Father was a script of underground world in New York. Although the novel contained blood, crime and violence, the attractive and vivid plots fulfilled peoples curiosity to that strange world. And that maybe the reason why God Father could become one of the most popular book in the world.

Music Writing Assessment no. 3 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Music Writing Assessment no. 3 - Essay Example Through this process of ear training is when a music student is able to identify the music, text and drama within the same piece of music (Steven). Ear training in music is also referred to as aural skills and it is the process that is used by musicians to identify the elements of music which are basics. Ear training is a very important thing because it allows a person who is hearing a piece of music to easily identify the rhythms, the chords and the different intervals that are in the piece of music being sung. The piece of music that this research has focused on is Amazing Grace by Jack Scharader and after hearing part of it for 12 seconds we are able to discuss it and how it has helped me in my music ear training. The part of the song that I picked was between 1: 36-1:47 of the piece of music and after listening to it clearly I was able to discuss about it. When discussing any type of music, it is essential to focus on the elements of music as they have been used in the song that one hears since this is what is mostly required for the training of the ear of the person hearing a piece of music. Focusing on the elements of music is very important because these are the building blocks in any given piece of music. The very first element of music that we should be concerned with is the melody of a given song because this is the part of music that we usually remember and that many different cultures in the world share the concept of melody in order to beautify their style of music (Steven). Melody can be defined as the coherent succession in the single pitches in music since a pitch in music is how high or low the tones are in music. Any music that does not have melody in it cannot be described as an influential music since music without melody does not exist. Intervals are the distance or the range that exists between different pitches in music. Melodies in

Project Planning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Project Planning - Essay Example This project plan would help in optimally utilizing the available resources. Designing WBS in a proper fashion will help to understand the cost control techniques and the scheduling techniques that are needed to be adopted to ensure a smooth flow of operations in order to complete the project within the pre-determined time. Proper planning forms the backbone of any process or task that needs to be accomplished successfully. Planning would help to understand the resources that would be needed to complete the project and whether those resources are available or not. It would also enable in understanding the risks that are associated in completing the project within the stipulated time frame. To meet the project deadlines, the suppliers need to be identified. Local suppliers should be contracted to avoid the possibility of construction bottlenecks resulting from the non availability of raw materials at the required point of time. Distant suppliers should not be contracted as this would incur additional costs and make the accomplishment of the project objectives difficult within the specified timeframe. ... Measures should be taken so that the suppliers get to know when the stock has to be replenished and they can accordingly supply the raw materials which would ensure smooth flow of the construction process. Planning should be done to implement quality checks at the right time so that all the suppliers supply the same quality of raw materials. Being the project manager, it needs to be acknowledged that poor raw materials can pose as a potential blockage to the successful completion of the project. Usage of poor raw materials can lead to the crash of the newly constructed extension of the building. This might harm the inhabitants of the house and cause serious damages. So as a project manager, stringent quality checks must be installed to ensure that such type of incidents does not occur. Moreover, as the company has planned to outsource the work related with the fitting of Corgi boiler, extensive research should be done to identify the contractors to whom this work can be outsourced. Tenders should be invited and the contractor who has quoted the lowest price and at the same time offers quality services, should be chosen as the right person to do the necessary electric works. The nature of skilled workforce required to meet the project deadlines should be identified and the availability of such skilled workers must be cross checked. As the project is of shorter duration, to control costs, it was decided that daily wage labourers would be used to complete the work. Some workers would be kept reserved so that, if one of the masons' fails to turn up one day it would not create a barrier as far as the completion of the required work on that day is concerned. For developing a proper planning about the

Remember the Titans Essay Example for Free

Remember the Titans Essay A scene in the film of which I thought it was strong was when the new coach takes the players into the woods for a run and they arrive at a sort of cemetery. He tells them about a lesson from the death; they have to come together, otherwise they will be destroyed. He tells them whether they like each other or not, they should respect each other. I really like this scene of the movie, first, because I think it takes place in a special surrounding. All the players are exhausted from the running and kind of impressed by the place. Second, I like this part because I like the message and the way the coach tries to create one team out of two groups. The third message I got from the video is the fact that sports brings people together. No matter what race, as friends in a team you can make it work. In the video the white boys and the African-American boys have each their own team with their own rituals. Along the road, their passion for football and their desire to win brings them together. They combine their habits and the difference in their cultural backgrounds gives them a special feeling of a united group and makes them stronger. Also in other situations can sports play an important factor, you can see it in the world with for example the Olympic Games, but also other major sports events. I think sports can unite individuals from different cultural backgrounds because the rules are the same in every culture and as people are playing, they do not necessarily have to speak the same language. So, if you put the messages all together, I would say that in my opinion the movie is a really good one. After watching it I realized even more that it is about personalities and characters instead of the way people look or the cultural background they are from. Although it can be hard for some individuals to act this way, for example because of pressure from their peers or because the way they are raised. I hope that for the future that every day more people will realize that it is not about the differences, but about the similarities.

Tales Of Simple :: essays research papers

Langston Hughes is represented in Black Voices by the Tales of Simple. Hughes first presents his character Jessie B. Simple in the Forward: Who is Simple? In this tale the reader is given its first look at the character Jessie B. Simple who is a black man that represents almost the "anybody or everybody" of black society. Simple is a man who needs to drink, to numb the pain of living life. "Usually over a glass of beer, he tells me his tales... with a pain in his soul... sometimes as the old blues says... Simple might be laughing to keep from crying" (98, 99). Jessie B. Simple, also known as Simple, has just the right combination of qualities to be Black America's new spokesman and unsung hero. Simple seems to possess just enough urban humor and cynicism, down-home simplicity, naivete, and "boy-next-door innocence" that Simple easily becomes a character that hard-working, average, everyday people can relate to. He quickly becomes this sort of Black Every man whose bunions hurt all the time and whose thoughts are relatively quite simple, yet he is a man who rises above these facts and has a perception that shows the man to have great wisdom and incredible insight. And although he maintains seriousness for all his wisdom to come through; his presentation of the facts is given in a humorous manner. In Bop, "That's why so many white folks do not get their heads beat just for being white. But me --- a cop is liable to grab me almost anytime and beat my head- just for being colored " (105). This side to Simple is an example of Hughes attempt to give simple facts or actual truth but instead of telling these things harshly and angrily he tries to sweeten them with a little sarcastic humor. At times, Simple is full of pain. "I have had so many hardships in this life," said Simple, "that it is a wonder I'll live until I die" (105). This comment by Simple is one of Ramsey 2 many that help portray him as a simple man who has been both mentally and physically broken-down by society but who in Census also says that, in spite of all the hardships he has experienced, he is still here. Hughes, by using Simple, shows his discontent of the black man's world, yet in showing these feelings Hughes never portrays himself to be angry, overcome by fear, or overwhelmed by racial paranoia.

Diwali Experience

â€Å"Diwali Delight† The best feeling is to have all your long-time unseen relatives and friends gather around together and have a blast. Recently on my dad’s birthday, the day of October 26th, the start of Diwali, can be as delightful as any of your cultural holidays. Diwali is the festival of lights. Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. My dad was the first one to come to the United States in my whole, family, which makes me second generation Indian. He came from India for his masters in Alabama by the usual way of transportation: By flight. My family celebrates Diwali in three main ways: By lighting firecrackers, having a big family feast where only the men cook, and also by dancing to traditional Indian music. Diwali doesn’t just bring me boats load of fun, but also helps me recognize how light helps us in our everyday lives. As most people know, the lighting of firecrackers on Diwali Is we ll-known as the main event. Usually by 7 or 8’oclock, the neighborhood starts erupting. In our family it is traditional to go to our cousin’s house for this part of the event. All of the guests get one whole bag full of a different variety of firecrackers. The types include sparklers, rockets(which you blast), And also chain crackers, which are a hundreds of normal firecrackers put together. As the final crackers explode and the pictures are taken, we all head to our house, where we start the dinner feast. It is a custom in our family to let all the men cook a feast. As all the cars enter our driveway, all the men put on their baking gloves, and get ready to make a mess in the kitchen, while the women get very cautious about them and the children are playing in the backyard. As we hear a big scream from the parents for dinner, all the children quickly evacuate into the house. As we enter, our nose gets filled with the delightful aroma of the food. The food items prepared vary every year, which keeps us in anxiety. Recently, we had a type of Indian bread with different curries. Last but not least, we dance to traditional Bollywood music, which includes classical, vocational, and some of R&B music. After our food digests, we play music from an ipod and everybody dances in joy.In conclusion, Diwali is always a great experience with your family members. I am proud that I am second generation Indian, and that we have a chance to celebrate Diwali. In my opinion, I believe our family celebrates this holiday the best by lighting up firecrackers, having a big family feast, and by dancing to traditional music. As said before, Diwali doesn’t just bring fun, but helps me recognize the importance of light in our everyday lives, which is believed to be the motive in our culture to celebrate this holiday.

Improving Mobile Access to Government Websites

The U.S. federal government is working to improve access to the wealth of information and services available on its more than 11,000 websites from mobile devices like tablets and cellphones, according to an interesting new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO). While most people still use desktop and laptop computers, consumers are increasingly using mobile devices to access websites with government information and services. As the GAO noted, millions of Americans use mobile devices every day to get information from websites. In addition, mobile users can now do many things on websites that previously required a desktop or laptop computer, like shopping, banking, and accessing government services. For example, the number of individual visitors using cellphones and tablets to access the Department of the Interiors information and services increased significantly from 57,428 visitors in 2011 to 1,206,959 in 2013, according to agency records provided to the GAO. Given this trend, the GAO pointed that the government needs to make its wealth of information and services available â€Å"anytime, anywhere, and on any device.†    However, as the GAO points out, mobile Internet users face a range of challenges accessing government services online. â€Å"For example, viewing any website that has not been â€Å"optimized† for mobile access—in other words, redesigned for smaller screens—can be challenging,† notes the GAO report. Trying to Meet the Mobile Challenge On May 23, 2012, President Obama issued an executive order entitled â€Å"Building a 21st Century Digital Government,† directing the federal agencies to deliver better digital services to the American people. â€Å"As a Government, and as a trusted provider of services, we must never forget who our customers are – the American people,† the President told the agencies. In response to that order, the White House’s Office of Management and Budget created a Digital Government Strategy to be implemented by the Digital Services Advisory Group. The Advisory Group provides the agencies with help and resources needed to improve access to their websites via mobile devices. At the request of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), the government’s purchasing agent and property manager, the GAO investigated the progress and success of the agencies in meeting the goals of the Digital Government Strategy. What the GAO Found In all, 24 agencies are required to comply with provisions of the Digital Government Strategy, and according to the GAO, all 24 have made efforts to improve their digital services for those who use mobile devices. In its investigation the GAO specifically reviewed six randomly selected agencies: the Department of the Interior (DOI), the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) within the Department of Homeland Security, the National Weather Service (NWS) within the Department of Commerce, the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The GAO reviewed 5 years (2009 through 2013) of online visitor data as recorded by Google Analytics from each agency. The data included the type of device (smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer) consumers used to access the agencies’ main website. In addition, the GAO interviewed officials from the six agencies to gather insights about the challenges consumers might face when accessing government services using their mobile devices. The GAO found that five of the six agencies have taken substantive steps to improve access to their websites via mobile devices. For example in 2012, the DOT fully redesigned its main website to provide a separate platform for mobile users. Three of the other agencies GAO interviewed have also redesigned their websites to better accommodate mobile devices and the other two agencies have plans to do so. Of the 6 agencies reviewed by the GAO, only the Federal Maritime Commission had yet to take steps to enhance access to their websites via mobile devices, but plans to enhance access to its website in 2015. Who Uses Mobile Devices? Perhaps the most interesting part of the GAO’s report is an accounting of who most often use mobile devices to access websites. The GAO cites a Pew Research Center report from 2013 showing that certain groups relied on cellphones to access websites than others. In general, PEW found that people who are young, have more income, have graduate degrees, or are African American have the highest rate of mobile access. In contrast, PEW found that people less likely to use mobile devices to access websites in 2013 included seniors, the less educated, or rural populations. Of course, there are still many rural areas that lack cellphone service, let alone wireless Internet access. Only 22% of people 65 and older used mobile devices to access the Internet, compared to 85% of younger people. â€Å"GAO also found that access to the Internet using cellphones has increased, primarily due to lower cost, convenience, and technical advances,† stated the GAO report. Specifically, the Pew survey found that: 74% of African Americans use cellphones to access the Internet.85% of people ages 18 to 29 used cellphones to access the Internet, compared to only 22% of seniors age 65 and older.79% of those using cellphones to access the Internet have incomes of at least $75,000.Only 50% of people living in rural areas use cellphones to access the Internet.74% have college degrees or higher, compared to 53% with a high school diploma and 51% without a high school education. The GAO made no recommendations in relationship to its findings, and issued its report for informational purposes only.
